I'm paranoid of being flamed posting something thats a recommendation, but stuff like this I feel obliged to post, hope its cool in this section.

If your really serious about being a musician it makes sense to get yourselve represented by a performing rights organization.
Usually the names you hear thrown around are BMI and ASCAP but SESAC a smaller more boutique performing rights org is the way to go. They give you special attention as well as help you out with tour and living expenses.
