Question Gibson 336 vs the new 339?

Hi guys.
If there's already been a discussion about this, point me to it please. I just became aware of the 339 and it seems to me it wasn't that long ago Gibson was making the 336, both basically shrunk down 335s and both custom shop models. If I remember correctly, the 336 was more dolled-up and more expensive and the 339 has the Memphis Tone Circuit, but other than that, they seem VERY similar. Just wondering if anyone knows anything about Gibson's decision to make this change (other than to sell more guitars)........?

Don't know... but the 339 is only available from Musician's Friend for a while....so it will be a while before we can play one out in the wild. I played a 336 at the Hollywood Guitar Center, and while I did like the body size.... I prefer the larger body of a 335 (particularly the early 70s models they had next door in the vintage room....starting at $4500).

The 336 and newer 335s have the "more solid" Les Paul style necks...which make the feel like...well, a Les Paul. The vintage instruments have a unique "lighter" 335 style neck that "feels" like you are playing a semi hollow.

Supposedly, they're available at Music 123, Private Reserve and Guitar Center also, according to Gibson. And the more I think about it, Gibson makes about 20 different LPs and SGs these days so why would they make only one mini-335?

335s are arguably much harder to make than Les Pauls and SGs...but yet, they cost only a bit more new.

I'm looking at a 335 to be my next guitar. Most likely this one.... but I'm only considering one of those vintage models. Unfortunately after the binge of guitars and music gear that I've bought over the past 12 months.... I'm at least a year from looking at them seriously.

Go here for a Gibson article on the differences between the 336 and 339:

Thanks for the link, Badger. (Sorry, I've been away for a while).

No problem

Have you done any research on these guitars or played one at a local guitar shop?
