Default Gibson SG Special

Just wondering if any one has any sorta experience good or bad with this guitar. Im looking to get a guitar within a gibson SG special price range and wondered if anyone know's of any other guitar/s that would be a wiser choice, yet still provide a classic rock tone.

It's not an "Angus Young" SG standard, if that's what you're looking for. It's missing the binding on the neck and the pickups are very different. I played the Melody Maker at Guitar Center a few weeks ago, and the neck felt "fake" to me.....although I did not try this SG. I'm not a fan of Gibson's low end American stuff. You might be better off looking at an ESP equivalent to an SG for about the same money...it will probably play and sound more like a real SG.

I've got a double-cut Les Paul Special in the newish faded finish and I have to say that I'm thrilled with it. The P90's are pure rock and roll and the guitar, especially the neck, feels like what I've been looking for all these years. I tried other guitars in the same price range (prs se w/ p90's, everything else in guitar center) and didn't find anything that compared at that price. I wandered around the store in a daze. The SG Classic was a bit more money than I wanted to spend. They now have the Junior model. 1 pup instead of two and I believe the faded finish, but hey... I now wanna spend that money.

Eventually, I was frustrated and on the verge of walking out without a new guitar - which is one hell of a @*#$ moment. I walked past the LP Special's once again and my wife stopped me and said, "You keep looking at that one like you want to ask it to the prom," and forced me to play it.

Number one guitar. First one I pick up. Every time.

I'm a fan of the cheaper Gibsons. They're all I can afford and they rock like the unholy mother of hell.

The SG you're looking at is lighter (not by much), but thinner. The neck joint on SG's can be a problem. Play a Les Paul Special or Junior before you buy the SG, but any of them will be a guitar to last a lifetime.

BMiller,

I have the same guitar and I couldn't agree with you more. I wrote a review of my Vox Valvetronix amp that included comments about my Les Paul Special and a photo of the guitar and amp. See it here: Modeling amps

These guitars are a great value and are definitely underrated.
