Default Fret replacement

Hello all, newbie here. I have a '76 Strat, and I am curious , I am thinking about getting it refretted, and was wondering what something like that will cost? Anyone had it done recently? the frets are very worn, and I get a lot of buzzing on the low E string, and also on the high E.

Yep.... a buddy of mine just got a bunch of lower frets re-done on a Fender and it cost him about $200, but the guitar was completely re-setup and plays better than ever. You should find a reputable luthier in your area. On your Strat, you may want to go somewhere that specializes on working on vintage instruments

$200-$250 sounds right. And good advice on finding someone who specializes in vintage instruments. If your 76 Strat is all original it is now worth $2-$3 thousand bucks, so you want to make sure the job is done correctly.

Hmmm, really? Worth that much? I put in a 5 position switch a few years back, but I saved the original. And the Tremolo bar is a replacement. But other than that, it should be all original. I bought it used in February of '79. I even have the chrome bridge cover for it.... I have had several "Strat" people tell me it is the heaviest Strat they have ever seen. It does seem really stout compared to other Strats i have played.

here are a few photos of it.

Here are links to some 76 Strats selling at Gbase.Com - Guitars & Musician's Gear from hundreds of small businesses and collectors.

Wide range of prices - from $1500 for one that was heavily modified to over $4000. And prices for Strats of this vintage continue to climb. So, take good care of her!

Hmmm, now I have to see if I can find a place near St. Louis that will give me an estimate on the refretting job...

This shop advertises in Vintage Guitar magazine:

EDDIESGUITARS HOME

Quick look at the web site suggests it is a well-run business, but I've never been there so I can't vouch for their service/repair department.

Do not sell that guitar now....The recession is hitting the collecting business hard, and people are selling vintage guitars at bargain basement prices to make mortgage payments. Wait a few years until this passes and I bet you'll be selling that guitar for 5 figures.

I recently saw an 80's 30th anniversary Les Paul Gold Top sell for $1800....just 2 years ago I saw the same model selling for $4000. Investing is all about when you get in and when you get out.

I'm not planning on selling it ( unless someone makes me an offer "I can't refuse" ) I am just shocked that a 70's Strat is worth anything near that much. I guess I'm a bit out of the loop on prices. I bought it in 1979, I traded a cheap Crown Strat copy, and $250 for it. Looks like I did well huh? haha

Badger, are you in the St. Louis area?

And thanks to all for the info, it's very helpful !!

Damn right you did well

Steve, I'm in Cincinnati, but I'm a guitar junkie and I read Vintage Guitar magazine cover-to-cover every month. Eddie's always advertises in that pub, so I figured they'd be a good starting point for you. (I have spent some time in St. Louis, including down on the riverfront where I saw some great live blues at some of the bars in that warehouse district.)

Adaptable, you're right. If anything this is a good time to BUY guitars. Hmmm...
