Default Tom Petty super bowl guitars

Always great to see Tom Petty perform live. Not sure how good his voice sounded during American Girl, but he seemed to get better as the night went on. How about those guitars? Between the 3 guitar players I saw a Rick, a Deusenberg, a Strat, an unindentifiable doubleneck (ESP?), and a massive Gibson acoustic (J-200?).

But for me the winner was Petty's sonic blue Telecaster with the rosewood fretboard. That guitar was just dripping with retro cool.

I've heard from several people on the Super Bowl halftime show, and in general they were less than impressed with Tom Petty's performance.

Yeah....his voice was off (too gruff), and Mike Campbell too a bit too many liberties with some of the signature riffs/leads (like the ending lead for "American Girl").

Prince put on a much more interesting performance a couple of years ago.

Bring back "Up with People"!!! ...kidding.

Nonsense.
I love Prince and his SB show was awesome but what this damaged country can use right now is some solid Americana; no wardrobe malfunctions, no booty shakin', no rednecks (uh, well ok as long as it doesn't show like a giant beer gut, an affected drawl, buscuits, and dumb, dumb songs about who your friends are..) my humble opinion heh..right.
just some great live rock & roll.
Petty and SB = a Great Show.

OK, let's go back to what started this thread -- what did you think of the guitars the band was playing? After all this is a guitar forum

RonRay, welcome to the forum! We can use some more members willing to speak their minds and participate.

Lots of cool guitars through cool vintage Vox amps (probably custom wired). Hey, if I were making six-to-seven figures playing at halftime at the superbowl, I'd buy the most expensive guitars I could and write them off my taxes. I played a 12-String Rickenbacker a few weeks ago and learned an interesting lesson recording with one; they are better suited for playing more low register melodic lines than strumming chords....but I digress. I've always been a fan of Mike Campbell's tone and playing. He has a great "growl" to his sound that is so trademark....although it's probably vintage Strats, Teles, and Pauls on the records.

I was on my third Heineken by the time the halftime show started....guitars? What guitars? I was more impressed that it wasn't a lipsync performance....and wow, does everybody look old in HD with the caked on makeup?! Terry Bradshaw looked like Grandpa Munster. I'm still recovering from the Patriot's loss.

Hey, I can relate. Probably not surprising, given my chosen screen name, that I'm a Wisconsin native and Packer fan. Watching them lose to the Giants the way they did was painful. We were all hoping this was Favre's year to get one more championship...

well being as Tom is my home boy (fla.) I have always dug the heartbreakers.and the blue tele was rockin ,I was surprised to see him not playing his signature honey tele or one of his rickies,The blue tele was probably a cunetto relic or custom shop special donated by fender for exposure but who knows. At least it wasn't rap or justin timberlake girly music .Rock on.

You got that right. Timberlake is better as a comedian than a musician. He's done some damn funny skits on SNL. But I can definitely do without the tunes.

As for Petty's band actually playing live, I have my doubts. The logistics of attempting a live broadcast/mix of a rock band as big as Petty's from a four ton moveable stage with literally no time for a sound check are unfathomable. My educated guess is, is that Petty (and band) did sing live, but to a pre-recorded track, done earlier in the day on location to make it really sound live. The Stones did actually play and sing live several years before, and we all remember what THAT sounded like. But since this is about guitars, enyone ever seen Campell's LP gold-top with the Gretsch PUP's? God I wonder what that baby sounds like....
