| Putting new pickups in a cheap guitar like an Ashton is like putting lipstick on a pig. I think the most dramatic thing you could do to improve the sound is to pickup a Line6 Pod (either a Pocket Pod, Podxt, or Podxt Live). Properly adjust, a Pod can make just about any guitar and amp combo sound great at moderate volumes.....plus its a tool that you'll use as you improve and want to record onto your PC or simply need a headphone amp.

| It's basically a very good digital emulation of 100s of stomp boxes, amps, tuners, and an other assort tone shaping devices....all editable via your computer. It also allows you to use it as an effect processor in front of your current amp....or as a headphone amplifier....as well as a digital recording device into your computer. Its probably the least expensive and more useful way to get just about any guitar to sound good.
