Question Political Rockers

I have just finished listening to Dave Mustaine's latest effort "United Abominations" and I am a bit dissappointed. Not in the music, but the lyrics left me a little bit wanting. Every track on the CD was a political statement about the state of the world and I dont remember rock and roll being that way. I grew up in the 80's and thats when lyrics were about drugs, sex, sex while on drugs, parties on drugs and sex parties. Not about the middle eastern policy from the US. I dont know but I just cant hear David Lee Roth singing about nuclear weaponry. Am I wrong or should Bono have been hushed years ago?

Hey caw...

I haven't listened to Megadeath or anything by Dave Mustaine, but I hear where your coming from about music being explicitly political. One of the things that makes Bob Dylan great is that his lyrics can be interpreted many different ways... if you want to hear a political message in them, than that's what you'll hear... but if would rather hear a song about how life moves on and people change...that's what you'll hear. It's not preachy.... it's open for interpretation.

I do think that U2's "One" is one of the best songs written in my lifetime....and when you read the stories about when they wrote it, it's interesting how it nothing to do with politics and everything to do with what the band was going through at the time.

John Lennon's "Imagine" is also that way too. In a way... straddling the line between being explicit about a message and leaving it open for interpretation is what makes these songs great.

I've been listening to a lot of ZZ Top this week. That's the great thing about music... it takes you to another place....whether it's a whorehouse in Texas, a tour bus in Germany, or at a conference at the UN.
