Default Tom Petty on VH1 Classic

Surfing cable on the weekends can be very rewarding, as you'll run across some great bands performing/being interviewed.

Last weekend I caught a show on VH1 Classic that I believe was called "Soundstage" or "Soundscapes," and subtitled "Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers - Return to Gatorville."

Before I talk about the show, I'll add that one of my favorite editions of Vintage Guitar magazine is the November 2006 issue that features the guitar collection of Tom Petty and Mike Campbell, with a good inteview and great photos of their awesome vintage guitars.

Wherever they were when they played the VH1 concert they must have been close to home, because they broke out some unbelievable axes, including the two pictured below...

1. Bigbsby Guitar (cannot imagine what that must be worth)
2. '61 Gibson Les Paul (1st year SG-style body with PAFs? No way I'd bring that on the road)

Between the two of them they switched around to many other great guitars, but those two were the stars of the show. And I thought the band sounded excellent -- much better than that questionable Super Bowl halftime appearance.

Vintage Guitar lets you order back issues, and you can probably find the live performance running again on VH1. If you're a Petty fan or just a guitar nut (which is highly likely if you're reading this), I highly recommend seeking out both.
