As for Petty's band actually playing live, I have my doubts. The logistics of attempting a live broadcast/mix of a rock band as big as Petty's from a four ton moveable stage with literally no time for a sound check are unfathomable. My educated guess is, is that Petty (and band) did sing live, but to a pre-recorded track, done earlier in the day on location to make it really sound live. The Stones did actually play and sing live several years before, and we all remember what THAT sounded like. But since this is about guitars, enyone ever seen Campell's LP gold-top with the Gretsch PUP's? God I wonder what that baby sounds like....
