Side by side to the real instrument, the Variax sounds almost as good as strats and teles.... and perhaps just as good with Les Pauls, 335s, and other assorted solid bodies/semis....and enough to be convincing live with 12 strings, sitars, jazz hollow bodies, and other assorted instruments.
If it played/felt more like a Strat or Tele and had a couple of Texas Specials in it, I would use it exclusively. I'm even considering transplanting the electronics in a vintage feeling tele someday.
In the studio, I can hear the high end cut out on longer sustaining notes, and sometimes the attacks sound awkward on the 12 strings and acoustics, but live I consistently get compliments on my sound. I can swap to radically different sounds in the middle of a song with a flick of a foot pedal (with the PodXT Live).
It is a wonderful instrument for live gigs with a lot of variety. Also...it has NO noise...no matter how freaky the signal chain is!
